Canadian Open

Singles – Third Round: (2) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Chanelle Scheepers 6-2 6-4

Agnieszka Radwanska kept alive her hopes of reaching #1… but we’ll be getting back to that. Chanelle Scheepers will stay around #40.

Singles – Third Round: Roberta Vinci def. (6) Angelique Kerber 6-2 7-6(9-7)

Angelique Kerber misses another chance to reach #6. Roberta Vinci has defended her points and is just below the Top 25.

Singles – Third Round: (7) Caroline Wozniacki def. Varvara Lepchenko 4-6 6-3 6-4

Caroline Wozniacki had the trainer out in the second set, and she had to spend two and a half hours on the court. Not a promising result for the first match of the day. But at least she survived. Varvara Lepchenko, had she won this, would have had a very good shot at a U. S. Open seed. That looks pretty unlikely now.

Singles – Third Round: (10) Li Na def (8) Sara Errani 6-4 6-2

We show Li Na moving into an exact tie for the #10 ranking. Win her next match and she would clinch the #10 spot. Two more wins and she would pass Errani for #9.

Singles – Third Round: Tamira Paszek def. Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-0

That helps get the schedule back under control…. Tamira Paszek is now firmly in the Top Forty; Carla Suarez Navarro isn’t.

Singles – Third Round: (WC) Aleksandra Wozniak def. Christina McHale 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Not much to this, really; Aleksandra Wozniak was already up 5-2 in the second set when rain forced a delay. Wozniak really didn’t do much except a little extra warmup — and earned a Top Fifty spot as a result. Christina McHale lost her chance to clinch a Top 25 spot.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (10) Li Na def. (2) Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-1

This really was pretty lopsided; Li Na won more than 60% of the points. That of course costs Agnieszka Radwanska her chance for #1 this week, and will make it a lot harder next week also. Li Na is now definitely in the Top Ten; Marion Bartoli is out. To add to her good fortune, Li was the only player to reach the semifinal before yet another rain delay.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Petra Kvitova def. Tamira Paszek 6-3 6-2

It’s odd, when you think about it: Last year, hardcourt was Petra Kvitova’s worst surface. But, this year, she seems to be making a comeback on it. She is the top seed left, and if she can win the title, she will return to the Top Five. Tamira Paszek will be probably #36, meaning that she will have a shot at earning a U. S. Open seed at Cincinnati, but this makes it much harder.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) Caroline Wozniacki def. (WC) Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4 6-4

Pretty impressive that Caroline Wozniacki could do this on a bad knee. Of course, Aleksandra Wozniak was tired too. Wozniacki won’t rise above #8 this week, but this really does seem like her most promising result in a while. At least, the result does. The five match points blown weren’t so impressive.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (16) Lucie Safarova def. Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-2

This was the first match to finish after the last delay, and it puts Lucie Safarova firmly in the Top Twenty. It appears Roberta Vinci will have to settle for #26.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Mattek-Sands/Mirza 1-6 7-5 10-5 (Match TB)

Petrova/Srebotnik are a new team. Looks like they needed a little while to learn how to work together.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic def. Makarova/Savchuk 6-3 6-7(3-7) 10-6 (Match TB)

Strange. Makarova/Savchuk could beat Errani/Vinci and couldn’t beat Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic?

Doubles – Semifinal: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. (1) Huber/Raymond 6-4 6-4

Pretty stunning. Petrova/Srebotnik were playing their second match of the day, and they played better than in the first!

Doubles – Semifinal: Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic def. Rodionova/Voskoboeva 6-3 7-6(7-5)

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
