Singles – Semifinal: (1) N Djokovic def. (5) J Tipsarevic 6-4 6-1
The rain caused this match to start rather late. Then it was halted after five tough games. When they came back after that, Novak Djokovic seemed determined to speed things up, and won nine of the remaining twelve games. Djokovic has now assured that he will have a shot at #1 at Cincinnati — if Roger Federer cooperates. How much Federer will have to cooperate will depend on the result of the Toronto final, of course. Janko Tipsarevic appears to have earned enough points to regain the #8 ranking.
Singles – Semifinal: (14) R Gasquet def. (8) J Isner 7-6(7-3) 6-3
There goes John Isner’s Top Ten shot. But Richard Gasquet is up to #13; suddenly he can think about the #12 U. S. Open seed.
Isner after this loss withdrew from Cincinnati, citing a bad back. That guarantees no Top Eight U. S. Open seed, either; he’s just too far back. Indeed, it puts his Top Twelve seeding in some danger. Especially if Gasquet can win Toronto — and Gasquet will have a big edge in rest.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Granollers/M Lopez def. (1) Mirnyi/Nestor 6-4 6-4
Quite the shock, on hardcourt in Canada. Granollers/Lopez appear to be up to #5 in the Race, which is pretty impressive for a team that isn’t even full time.
