Canadian Open

The day’s first big news wasn’t even a match. It was a withdrawal. Olympic silver medalist Maria Sharapova is out of the Canadian Open. She cited a stomach virus. That costs her her shot at #1, all but clinching the spot for Victoria Azarenka. That means both Olympic finalists are out.

Singles – First Round: Peng Shuai def. (Q) Aravane Rezai 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Aravane Rezai remains stuck below the Top Hundred. Peng Shuai defends her points, but she is still below the Top Thirty; she will probably need more to earn a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – First Round: Varvara Lepchenko def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-3

Varvara Lepchenko just about guarantees her Top Forty spot while costing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova her chance at the Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: Christina McHale def. (Q) Arantxa Rus 3-6 6-1 6-3

Not many points yet for Christina McHale, but she looks very likely to hit the Top 25.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Kiki Bertens def. Nadia Petrova 3-6 7-6(7-4) 6-4

We have to think that this is an Olympic hangover — Nadia Petrova lost fairly early in singles, but she was around on the last day in doubles. She loses her chance to clinch a Top Twenty spot.

Singles – First Round: (WC) Eugenie Bouchard def. Shahar Peer 3-6 6-2 7-5

Shahar Peer remains well below the Top Fifty. Eugenie Bouchard, who was #294 a week ago, and who came here at #237, will rise to probably just above #200.

Singles – First Round: Mona Barthel def. (Q) Timea Babos 6-4 5-7 7-6(7-5)

Mona Barthel adds a few points but remains below #35. She needs probably about 125 more points to earn a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: (4) Samantha Stosur def. Simona Halep 7-5 4-4, retired (left thigh injury)

The evening matches were pretty well cursed — two retirements and a collapse. This will drop Simona Halep out of the Top Fifty. Last year’s finalist Samantha Stosur of course still has a lot of points to defend.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Petra Kvitova def. Ksenia Pervak 4-6 7-6(7-0) 6-0

There was a rain delay in the second set of this, and whatever Ksenia Pervak did during that delay, it completely ruined things for her. There wasn’t much to say about what followed….

Singles – Second Round: (8) Sara Errani def. (Q) Jana Cepelova 6-3 6-2

This probably means that Jana Cepelova won’t make the Top Hundred at this time, but based on her recent results, it won’t be long.

Singles – Second Round: Chanelle Scheepers def. (14) Flavia Pennetta 4-1, retired (right wrist injury)

Like the Pervak match, this was messed up by the rain — although it was just starting when the rain began, so Flavia Pennetta can’t blame her problems on that. There is a very good chance this will cost her her #17 ranking. Chanelle Scheepers is likely to hit the Top Forty — stunningly, she pushes Svetlana Kuznetsova below that mark.

Singles – Second Round: (16) Lucie Safarova def. (Q) Sesil Karatantcheva 6-4 6-4

Even with the loss, Sesil Karatantcheva is back in the Top Hundred. Lucie Safarova needs one more win to defend her points.

Doubles – First Round: (6) Kops-Jones/Spears def. (WC) Bouchard/Wozniak 6-2 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Mattek-Sands/Mirza def. (7) Goerges/Peschke 7-6(7-1) 6-3

So far, Kveta Peschke isn’t doing any better without Katarina Srebotnik than she was doing with her.

Doubles – First Round: Lisicki/Peng def. (8) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova 6-2 6-1

Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova really do seem to need a break. Or something to get them back on track.

Doubles – First Round: Chuang/Zhang def. Klepac/Tatishvili 3-6 7-5 11-9 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Cibulkova/Hantuchova def. (WC) Fichman/Pelletier 5-7 6-3 12-10 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Chan/Chan def. Lee-Waters/Moulton-Levy 2-6 6-3 10-4 (Match TB)

Doubles – Second Round: Makarova/Savchuk def. (2) Errani/Vinci 6-3 2-6 10-5 (Match TB)

It may just be the transition to hardcourt, but this is pretty shocking. That’s a real blow to Errani and Vinci’s hopes of reaching #1.
