Tommy Haas can’t believe his fast-track progress back through the ranks of the ATP as the 34-year-old celebrates a return to the top 25. Haas has played three finals in five weeks on three different surfaces. He won on grass in Halle in June and made title bids on Hamburg clay and last weekend in Washington in steamy conditions on cement.
“It’s really only been the last four or five months that I’m really playing some high quality tennis again where I feel like I can pretty much still beat anybody,” said the former No. 2 on the ATP.
“Six months, nine months, twelve months ago that certainly wasn’t the case. Twelve months ago the same situation I am today, I didn’t know how much longer I was going to play if I was going to continue to play like that.”
The German who was not nominated for an Olympic wild card by his federation, has shrugged off that slight and is moving on with the US Open now in view. “A lot of the times where I go in the match I feel like if I can just play my game and play well and stay physically and mentally strong, you know, I feel like I have good chances of winning the match.”
Haas has stormed back into form after undergoing hip and elbow operations during 2010-2011.
