Singles – Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. B Tomic 6-2 6-3

Novak Djokovic can’t regain the #1 ranking this week, but the better he does, obviously, the better his chances in the next month. And there are no other seeds left in his quarter.

Singles – Second Round: (2) A Murray def. (Q) F Cipolla 6-1 6-3

Andy Murray just keeps on marching on. He still needs another 700 points to reach #3, but it’s possible….

Singles – Second Round: J Chardy def. (3) J Tsonga 6-4 7-6(7-4)

Hm. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga played the Olympics; Jeremy Chardy didn’t. This may be a theme we repeat a few times…. This lets David Ferrer keep the #5 ranking; Tsonga will not rise above #6. Chardy will be hitting the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (4) T Berdych def. J Benneteau 6-7(10-12) 6-4 6-4

Tomas Berdych has an outside shot at the #6 ranking this week, but he’s going to be very tired — this took three hours and four minutes.

Singles – Second Round: (5) J Tipsarevic def. M Youzhny 7-6(7-2) 6-4

Janko Tipsarevic still needs more to regain the #8 ranking, but it’s a start. He leaves Mikhail Youzhny not much above #30, so the Russian will probably have to pick up a few points at Cincinnati to assure a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: R Stepanek def. (6) J del Potro 6-4 7-6(7-5)

Of the final four at the Olympics, three are here. Juan Martin del Potro was the first to play. Perhaps it’s not surprising that he was the first to fall. Radek Stepanek is now about 150 points from a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: T Haas def. (9) G Simon 6-2 6-3

Truly a remarkable summer for Tommy Haas. He now looks very likely to earn the #24 U. S. Open seed. Gilles Simon will almost certainly be #13 or #14.

Singles – Second Round: (10) M Cilic def. M Baghdatis 7-5 6-3

Marin Cilic defends his points. That doesn’t quite guarantee his Top Fifteen spot, but it is very likely. Marcos Baghdatis will be a little below #40, meaning that he will need to do something big in Cincinnati to earn a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – Second Round: (12) P Kohlschreiber def. (Q) F Fognini 6-2 6-2

After an injury two weeks ago and a very bad first round doubles match, this is a nice improvement for Philipp Kohlschreiber. He and Kei Nishikori will spend the next two weeks slugging it out for the #16 U. S. Open seed…

Singles – Second Round: S Querrey def. (13) K Nishikori 6-2 6-3

…and Nishikori puts himself at a distinct disadvantage. But Sam Querrey now looks almost certain to be seeded. This just about clinches a Top Thirty spot.

Singles – Second Round: (14) R Gasquet def. M Kukushkin 6-3 7-5

Richard Gasquet defends his points; one more win might put him back in the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: M Granollers def. (15) F Mayer 6-3 6-4

Florian Mayer becomes the first seed to fall here. That means no Top Twenty spot. Marcel Granollers is in the lead in the contest for the last Top 25 spot — but that probably won’t be settled for at least another day or two.

Doubles – First Round: Berdych/F Mayer def. Benneteau/Gasquet 7-6(7-2) 4-6 10-7 (Match TB)

Berdych and Benneteau must be really sick of seeing each other by now. This was another hour and 23 minutes they spent playing each other.

Doubles – First Round: Bracciali/Seppi def. Anderson/Butorac 6-3 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Raonic/Troicki def. Fish/Knowles 7-5 2-6 10-8 (Match TB)

Fish/Knowles had some very good success together a few years ago, but Fish hasn’t played much doubles lately; maybe he needs a while to get his skills back.

Doubles – First Round: Dodig/Melo def. (WC) Dancevic/V Pospisil 6-2 7-6(7-2)
