Steffi Graf was the first to complete a golden slam on the women’s side, now Serena Williams joins her in the history books with one of her own. Serena defeated Maria Sharapova of Russia 6-0 6-1 in quite possibly the most lopsided anticipated final ever. At first, you have to ask, what was wrong with Maria? How can a dominant player such as her not be able to put games on the board against one of her oldest rivals? Perhaps the only answer can be the fact Serena has been playing in a different class than everyone else since her first round French Open loss.
Serena and sister Venus will be contending the women’s doubles final as well, going for a record third Olympic gold together. It has been incredible to see how these two Americans have dominated the women’s game. What’s next after these two retire? Will another American woman step up and take hold of the WTA tour? Or will there just be outside contenders like on the men’s side? All that we know for certain is Serena is definitely enjoying herself right now, even showing off a stylish crip walk on centre court for the world to see. You go Serena.
