Andy Murray has come through for Britain , winning singles and doubles matches at the London Olympics to keep home medal hopes in tennis alive. The Scot next faces a re-run of the marathon Australian Open final when he plays a semi-final at Wimbledon against world No. 2 Novak Djokovic.
Murray won his singles over Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-1 with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge watching, then teamed with Laura Rob son for a mixed doubles opening victory over the Czechs led by Radek Stepanek 7-5, 6-7, 10-7.
The 25-year-old Murray, who shed tears after losing last month’s Wimbledon final to Roger Federer – the Swiss is also into the games semis and will face Juan Del Potro – is dreaming of gold medal glory at home.
“I know how much I care about the Olympics and how much I want to do well here,” he said. “I want to try to win a medal, be part of the team and try and help Britain ‘s medal count if I can. I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I hope I can go one better on Friday and get a medal.”
Murray ‘s win – the No. 4 has lost just one set so far – over the Spaniard in less than an hour put him in good stead for what will be a huge match-up with Djokovic.
Djokovic knows he will be up against both Murray and the London fans in the semis. “Andy is the home hero and he played the final at Wimbledon . He has played four Grand Slam finals and he has been at the top of the men’s game for many years. He has been playing better than ever on grass courts. I will have to be at the top of my game.”
