Venus Williams remains intent on winning a fourth Olympic gold medal in the Women’s Doubles with her sister Serena but her mind is never far away from creating new ideas for her EleVen range of sportswear.
The 31 year-old holds a degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and said she has always wanted to design ready-to-wear and sports apparel. Venus exclusively wears EleVen but she maintained: “Our next step is to show other players wearing it.”
After the first capsule collection launch in Miami in March before the Sony Ericsson Open, plans are now in almost finalized for a second round of designs to be presented to the world in Southampton , New York just before the U.S. Open.
Then once the tennis is coming to a climax at Flushing Meadows, the full EleVen collection will be revealed for the first time before the New York Fashion Week which runs September 6 thru 13.
Fashion insiders maintain Venus definitely keeps with the classic tennis attire silhouettes, her designs including shorts, dresses, skirts and tank-tops. However she adds a personal touch with eye-catching prints and hidden messages on each item of clothing such as: “Bring It,” and “Beat ‘Em!”. Another print, which featured the phrase: ‘Oh and Oh’, a play on the scoring system of tennis.
But one criticism is the designs are predominantly in black and white and there are calls for the final collection to involve a little more color.
