It’s so far, so good for Roger Federer and Serena Williams as the Grand Slam pair aim to duplicate their recent Wimbledon titles with career-first singles gold medals at the London Olympics.
Both multiple champion came through swirling windy conditions at the All England club in second-round matches. Between them Federer and Williams own 31 career singles trophies at the majors.
Federer was pleased with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over France’s Benneteau in just 58 minutes. Williams tamed Pole Urszula Radwanska 6-2, 6-3.
“The conditions were different. Obviously the roof was open, there was a bit of a swirly wind and I think he might have struggled a little bit with his serve in these conditions,” said Federer after beating the Frenchman who gave him trouble a month ago at Wimbledon.
“I think he also injured himself at the very end so that was unfortunate, but I was able to put together a solid performance today.”
Williams, a 30-year-old like Federer, fired off a win in an hour and a quarter. “It was a little windy. I’m glad I was able to pull through,” she said.
Federer and Stan Wawrinka won the Beijing doubles gold medal while Williams has claimed team gold with her sister Venus.
