Roger Federer has boosted his Wimbledon confidence even further with his three-set winning start over Alejandro Falla at the London Olympic tournament. With his next match coming against Julien Benneteau, the three-set format at Wimbledon could poses a theoretical danger after the Swiss trailed Benneteau two set to love a month ago on the grass.
The 30-year-old said that he’s finally absorbed the fact of claiming his seventh title at Wimbledon three weeks ago over Andy Murray and running his career total to 17 majors. He is trying to fill a gap by winning his first Olympic gold, saying every round feels like a final.
“Winning Wimbledon has definitely sunk in now, especially when I look at the draw here and see I’m the No. 1 seed. It hasn’t been that way in some time,” said the player who has been seeded at the top of the Olympic draw for the past three Games.
“I always believed I would get back to No. 1, I knew my game was strong. I had a couple of tough losses last year that stopped me going further and maybe get back there earlier. But the good thing is I never gave up and started to play better, especially at Wimbledon when the pressure was so high.
“It’s a dream come true and I’m happy I was able to do it because Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray – only the injured Nadal is missing from the Olympics – are in their prime. I shouldn’t be normally at my age.”
The Swiss, who won the Beijing doubles gold with Stanislas Wawrinka, added that he feels less pressure than expected. “I always thought when I played the Olympics at Wimbledon I would feel incredible pressure, but thinking about it I don’t have much pressure because I already have a gold medal.”
