Los Angeles, CA – Hometown favorite Sam Querrey won his third Farmers Classic title Sunday in a lopsided win over qualifier Ricardas Berankis. The 6-0, 6-2 victory took 51 minutes, with the first set lasting 19 minutes. It was an unfortunate end for Berankis who battled his way all the way from qualifying only to lose his form the day of the anticipated final. Regardless of how he played, Berankis walks away this week with a finalist check of $53,000 and a top 100 ranking. He is also the first ever Lithuanian to make it to an ATP tour-level final.
For Sam Querrey, it was just another day at the office. He prepared like a professional and produced another good title win. He’s reached a solid level of consistency at the ATP level and has been getting results around the world for years now. His approach to the match today was very simple, hit the ball back and wait to see what how Berankis handles it; If he got an opportunity to pounce on a short forehand or move around his backhand to hit one, he was swiftly taking it. Berankis made his day very easy as he completely lost his timing today and offered up unforced errors almost every point. You can hear Brad Gilbert somewhere in the background telling everyone: “See?! My winning ugly strategies DO work!” Sam didn’t really have to do anything but put first serves in (something that isn’t too hard for him as he stands 6’6″). It was sad but in the end Querrey collects the champion’s spoils that amount to $100,650 in prize money and 250 valuable ranking points.
