While Novak Djokovic “only” attracted around 50 journalists to his press conference in London, Wimbledon champion Roger Federer attracted around 700.
Like most tennis players, Federer is housing himself in Wimbledon village because he does not want to do the 2 hour round trip drive to the Olympic village. Plus he could very well be swarmed there.
“I have done the village before so it is not like I feel I have to do the village so badly,” he said. “I would love to, but of course I have also become very famous over the last eight years or so, so times have also changed, and when I do move around in the village things are not as simple as they were.
Some of the regular tennis journalists were upset at the press conference because they felt that there were fans posing as reporters.
One reporter was reported to have said to Federer: “As a journalist and as a fan, I know that you will win this Olympic gold” while another member of the media stated he’s “a big fan like so many other journalists.”
When asked who the biggest star of the Olympics is, sprinter Usain Bolt, swimmer Michael Phelps or Federer himself, the Swiss responded “Well, not me.”
