Roger Federer is understandably in a buoyant frame of mind. His 31st birthday is fast approaching but the Swiss is once more on top of the tennis world after reclaiming the world no.1 ranking with his seventh Wimbledon title and on the even of London 2012 and his quest for an Olympic gold medal at singles, he has not discounted the possibility of competing again at Rio de Janeiro in four years time.
Federer has relaxed his body since equaling the all-time best Wimbledon hauls of Pete Sampras and William Renshaw less than three weeks ago. A family holiday in Sardinia has rejuvenated mind and body and now the Swiss believes his form, fitness and attitude will allow him to remain competitive for four more years.
“Rio 2016, who knows?'” said Federer who will also be aiming to retain his Olympic doubles title alongside Stanislaus Wawrinka in the next ten days. I think I’m a chance. The mind, the body, there are so many moving parts, but everything is really good.
“So right now, I don’t think it’s impossible that I could be around for Rio. I’m about to turn 31. In Rio, I’ll be 35 but the mind is willing so we’ll see.”
The winner of a record 17 major titles is currently enjoying his 288th week as the worlds top ranked male player insisted: “There’s absolutely no plans for me to retire. I have plans for next year and beyond.
“When I won the French Open in 2009 and had my career grand slam, I was asked if I would play until London 2012. Now, I’m on the verge of that.”
Federer starts the Olympic tournament against Alejandro Falla, the Colombian who took the Swiss champion to five sets in the first round at Wimbledon two years ago. “I’ve got my work cut out to get through a tricky draw, but I’m not looking any further than that first match,” he said.
Federer said he was elated when doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka was given the honor of carrying the Swiss flag at the opening ceremony after he had been offered the role for a third time. He maintained: “I thought someone should have the chance to carry the flag.
“I would have loved to have done it for a third time. It was one of the highlights of my life to carry it in Athens and Beijing. But it is incredible that Stan was selected by Swiss Olympic. I think it’s a great decision.
