The William sisters will be sticking close to “home” during the London Olympics, likely meaning that the American pair could miss the opening ceremony located 20 kilometers away from their base at Wimbledon where they plan to spend the majority of their time.
The sisters have bowed to the inevitable and will not be risking any London traffic chaos during the Olympics, which start at the weekend. As a result, there is no confirmation that the high-profile pair will even attend Friday’s opening ceremonies.
Serena, who won the most recent edition of Wimbledon just over a fortnight ago – her fifth title there – has said she’s not in London for anything but winning. A gold medal in singles could make the 30-year-old the lone player to win all four slams, plus singles and doubles gold.
“It’s exciting to be back so soon, usually we have to wait 12 months to walk back on to centre court,” said Serena, who plans to stay in a London hotel rented by the US team not far from the All England club. “For me, I’m going to be really excited to have such a quick turn-around and get back on the grass where I love to play.”
Serena and older sister Venus won the doubles gold medal at Sydney in 2000 and Beijing four years ago. “Growing up as tennis players you always dream of winning grand slams and doing well at tournaments like Wimbledon,” said Venus. “To have an opportunity to win a gold medal and be mentioned among all the great athletes, that’s an honor.”
