Roger Federer continues to be an excellent investment for his stable of high-dollar sponsors, with the world No. 1 player’s recent Wimbledon performances watched by millions around the world. But in Britain, the impact of the finals victory over Scot Andy Murray had an even bigger impact for the Swiss player’s longtime sponsor Rolex of Geneva.
When Federer won his seventh title at the grass-court major and record 17th Grand Slam overall, the first thing he did was his commercial duty – he went quickly to his racquet bag and snapped his Oyster Perpetual Platinum, with a rose gold president’s bracelet and black dial with ruby and diamond inlays onto his right wrist.
That chore taken care of, the 30-year-old was then ready to receive the All England Club honors yet again as he raised the trophy high over his head with his watch flashing in front of around 17 million British television viewers.
Rolex dealers around the world – as well as the manufacturer itself – quietly thanked him once more as the prestige marquee scored another Grand Slam success in a long-term sponsorship which has gone from strength to strength.
Rolex first signed Federer six year ago for a reported $20 million, an investment that continues to pay off as the London Olympic Games approach. Industry experts believe that the halo effect from the Federer endorsement of the pricey watch line will even spur online sales as fans go looking for used timepieces from the company.
