Fourth seed Marcel Granollers advanced to his first final of the season Saturday at the ATP Vegeta Croatia Open Umag, defeating top-seeded countryman Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1 in two hours and 52 minutes.
After conceding the second set tie-break and falling behind an early service break in the third set, Granollers took over the match. He won the final six games, taking 65 per cent of his return points in the set to break the 2008 champion three times. Granollers improved to 2-0 against Verdasco, having won their first meeting in last year’s Gstaad final.
Ranked No. 24 in the Sourth African Airways ATP Rankings, Granollers is bidding to lift his fourth career trophy. Two of his previous three triumphs have come on clay.
In Sunday’s final, Granollers will play either No. 2 seed and home favourite Marin Cilic, or third-seeded reigning champion Alexandr Dolgopolov.
