There will be another Swiss carrying the flag at the London Games on July 27 after Roger Federer turned down the chance to be the Olympic standard-bearer for his nation.
“I was offered, but I might give another athlete a chance,” said the new No. 1 after winning his seventh Wimbledon final at the weekend over Andy Murray.
It will be a totally new look for the Swiss team after the world’s top player carried the flag at the 2004 Athens Games as well as Beijing four years ago when he won the doubles gold medal with Stanislas Wawrinka. Federer will be concentrating on trying to complete an historic double by winning the Olympic gold medal on the same court where he lifted his Wimbledon honors.
