The good news for Canada continues, with two of the northern nation’s juniors winning the Wimbledon girls and boys crowns. A day after Eugenie Bouchard won the girls’ singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, Filip Peliwo followed suit by winning the boys’ singles crown by taking out No. 1 Luke Seville of Australia 7-5, 6-4.
With Milos Raonic also having become a top 30 player on the ATP Tour, things are looking up.
Former Wimbledon finalist Nathalie Tauziat of France, who reached No. 3 in the ranking in 1998, coaches Bouchard. “She likes it. Eugenie likes to play in front of people, on the big court. To go play a first round, with no one in the stands, it ticks her off,” Tauziat told the Montreal Gazette.
Bouchard later joked: “She got to the finals of Wimbledon, so I can say, ‘I did better than you, I won.’ She doesn’t like that.”
Peliwo avenged his loss to Saville in the final of the Australian Open earlier this year and became the first Canadian boy to win a Grand Slam singles title.
Bouchard completed girls’ trophy sweep alongside American Taylor Townsend. They bested Belinda Bencic/Ana Konjuh 6-4, 6-3.
