Playing 18 holes of golf is not the usual reaction of a defending champion after losing his Wimbledon crown but that was Novak Djokovic’s say of purging his disappointment after last Friday’s semi-final defeat to Roger Federer.
Djokovic contacted Surbiton Golf Club, about eight miles distant from the All England Club and requested a tee-time as quickly as possible. Together with three of his support team, Djokovic played a full round before finishing around 9pm.
Clearly already coming to terms with his Wimbledon exit, Djokovic and his friends then posed for photographs with staff and guests from a golf society having dinner in the clubhouse. When asked if he wasn’t fed up after his defeat, Djokovic simply replied: “That’s life.”
Golf figured hugely in Djokovic’s attempts to keep his mind off the pressures of defending his title during the Championships. Coach Marian Vajda gave an insight into the Serb’s surprisingly relaxed attitude during the tournament when he said: “We’re staying in a house nearby and any free time we have been rushing off to golf courses. We have been playing at Royal Wimbledon and Surbiton.”
