Yaroslava Shvedova was totally unaware she had struck gold at Wimbledon as she turned in the first perfect (golden) set in tennis three decades after the last one. The 65th-ranked Kazakh worked her miracle as she beat Italy’s French Open finalist Sara Errani to reach the fourth round.
Shvedova has come close once before, running off 23 straight points at Memphis indoors in 2007 only to lose the contest. But she doesn’t even remember: “I have no idea, I don’t remember Memphis, even.”
The golden girl said that even after she won her Wimbledon match and was informed of the historic achievement she paid it little mind, “I still cannot believe, probably maybe they made the mistake or something. . . until like I went to have a bit of food before the mixed. My manager came, and she’s said ‘They checked the stats. They said it’s really true. You won 24 points in a row.'”
The Kazakh added that she was just playing and did not notice that she had won every point of the set, which lasted a quarter of an hour. “I was just playing. Like I said, like I had no idea every game was 4- Love.
