Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo knocked out fourth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, this year’s Australian Open champions, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(2), 8-6 on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals at The Championships.
The match resumed, after a lengthy rain delay, at 6-7, 30/30 on Paes’ serve, in the deciding set. Melo hit a forehand return winner down the line to set up match point and then Paes volleyed into the net off a powerful crosscourt forehand from Dodig to end three hours and 12 minutes of tennis.
Dodig and Melo hit 12 aces and 26 winners, breaking serve five times from 12 opportunities. They will now meet No. 10 seeds and 2010 Wimbledon champions Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner or Mikhail Elgin and Denis Istomin.
In the second round, Elgin and Istomin defeated seventh seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, the No. 7 seeds, who are representing India at the London Olympics in three weeks’ time, 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 in two hours and five minutes.
Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen also upset a seeded team, No. 8 seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer, 7-6(5), 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 5-7, 7-5 in four hours and two minutes.
The match resumed at 4-5 in the third set with Qureshi serving. The Pakistani faced one match point at 30/40, which he won on a second serve, before this season’s Estoril Open and Gerry Weber Open titlists staged a comeback.
Marray and Nielsen go onto meet James Cerretani and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
