Fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga proved to be too strong for Slovakian Lukas Lacko in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 victory over one hour and 36 minutes on Saturday at The Championships.
The 27-year-old Frenchman will next challenge 10th-seeded American Mardy Fish, who beat Belgian David Goffin 6-3, 7-6(6), 7-6(6), hitting 56 winners and 17 winners past the 21-year-old wild card for victory in two hours and 16 minutes. Fish is into the fourth round for the second time in 10 appearances.
“He’ll be a good player,” said Fish. “He got better and better every set today. I served well and was sort of able to control the match with my serve. I played much better today than I did in the past two matches, for sure. This was the best player that I played so far. It was windy out there. I used that to my advantage. Growing up in Florida and playing in windy conditions most of my life, that doesn’t bother me.”.
Goffin was bidding to become only the second man in the Open Era (since 1968) to reach the fourth round at his first two Grand Slam championships. Italy’s Francesco Cancellotti reached fourth round at 1984 and 1985 Roland Garros.
