Top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic weathered an early storm to beat No. 28 seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 on Friday for a place in the fourth round at The Championships, Wimbledon.
Djokovic, who improved to 7-1 lifetime against Stepanek with victory in two hours and 48 minutes, hit nine aces and 49 winners. He converted seven of his 19 break point opportunities and will next play his fellow Serb Viktor Troicki, who knocked out No. 15 seed of Argentina 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and 38 minutes.
“I was trying to focus from the start of my match,” said Djokovic. “Obviously I had a lot of chances in the opening set. But being aware of his qualities and experience, I wasn’t too surprised with the way he played in important moments. He was mentally very composed. He was out there to win a match. I was a set down, but managed to make the crucial break in the opening game of the second set, and then I thought I played really well.”
American Sam Querrey completed a 6-7(3), 7-6(7), 7-6(8), 6-4 victory over No. 21 seed Milos Raonic of Canada.
“This is definitely my biggest win in a long time,” said Querrey. “It was a big moment… and it feels great. I’m pretty calm and collected after a win or loss, but [I] kind of let it out there a little bit at the end. I was out for a while, and I feel like I’m coming back. [My] ranking is moving up. [It’s] just nice to be in the third round of a [Grand] Slam again.
World No. 64 Querrey, who underwent right elbow surgery 12 months ago and was ranked outside the Top 100 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings in April, won in three hours and three minutes. He will next play Croatian No. 16 seed Marin Cilic.
