Wimbledon
Singles – First Round: (7) D Ferrer def. D Brown 7-6(7-5) 6-4 6-4
David Ferrer extends his grass winning streak, keeping alive his faint hope of reaching #4 this week. Well, of reaching it next week; he can’t gain enough points unless he reaches the final weekend….
Singles – First Round: (21) M Raonic def. S Giraldo 6-4 6-4 6-4
Santiago Giraldo will remain below #40.
Singles – First Round: J Melzer def. (25) S Wawrinka 3-6 7-6(7-2) 2-6 6-4 8-6
Stanislas Wawrinka never did like grass much. We’d guess he will stay Top 25, but he could end up a little below that.
Singles – First Round: (30) A Roddick def. J Baker 7-6(7-1) 6-4 7-5
Andy Roddick still needs one more win to defend his points, but it looks as if this will keep him Top Thirty.
Singles – First Round: I Karlovic def. D Sela 6-4 6-4 7-6(7-5)
Dudi Sela made the second round last year. He obviously won’t be returning to the Top Hundred after this.
Singles – First Round: B Phau def. W Odesnik 6-3 3-6 6-7(3-7) 6-3 6-4
One suspects that Bjorn Phau has never before had this much crowd support in a match. Certainly not at a Slam!
Singles – First Round: L Kubot def. T Ito 7-6(8-6) 6-3 6-3
This won’t be the week Japan gets three players in the Top Fifty, it seems…. Lukasz Kubot needs at least two more wins to stay Top Fifty himself.
Singles – Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. R Harrison 6-4 6-4 6-4
This match was able to finish only because of the roof and the lights; all other matches had been halted long before it finished. It doesn’t make much difference for Novak Djokovic, but it leaves Ryan Harrison probably just above #50.
Singles – Second Round: (3) R Federer def. F Fognini 6-1 6-3 6-2
Again it looked as if Roger Federer was just practicing. He remains slightly ahead of Rafael Nadal in the contest for #2.
Singles – Second Round: (8) J Tipsarevic def. R Sweeting 5-7 7-5 6-4 6-2
Ryan Sweeting loses his chance (obviously not a great chance) to return to the Top Hundred.
Singles – Second Round: (12) N Almagro def. G Rufin 6-2 5-7 6-2 6-4
Nicolas Almagro hasn’t by any means clinched a Top Ten spot yet, but he is clearly the leading candidate. He’s #10 in safe points, and the next three guys active are Simon (not a grass player or a pressure player), Fish (hurting), and Monaco (not a grass player), so we’d say his odds are better than 50%.
Singles – Second Round: (15) J Monaco def. J Chardy 6-2 3-6 6-3 7-6(7-3)
A nice result for Juan Monaco, who lost his opener last year. No move for him yet, though.
Singles – Second Round: (18) R Gasquet def. R Bemelmans 6-3 6-4 6-4
Richard Gasquet defends his points, but he may well need more to stay Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: (26) M Youzhny def. I Cervantes 6-1 6-3 6-4
Mikhail Youzhny needs one more win to defend his points, but we would guess this will keep him above #35.
Singles – Second Round: (29) J Benneteau def. M Russell 7-6(7-4) 2-6 6-4 7-5
One more win would effectively clinch Julien Benneteau’s Top Thirty spot. Problem is, he faces Federer next.
Singles – Second Round: (31) F Mayer def. P Petzschner 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-2 6-4
With this, Florian Mayer starts to add points, making it almost certain that he will stay Top Thirty.
Singles – Second Round: D Istomin def. I Andreev 6-3 7-6(7-3) 4-6 6-2
Denis Istomin is now starting to add points. He might rise as high as #36.
Singles – Second Round: V Troicki def. M Klizan 6-4 4-6 5-7 7-6(7-3) 6-4
This probably won’t be quite enough to put Viktor Troicki back in the Top Thirty, but he is very close.
Singles – Second Round: J Janowicz def. E Gulbis 2-6 6-4 3-6 7-6(7-2) 9-7
That’s so typical of Ernests Gulbis — play giant-killer, then lose to a guy who, until this week, had only six ATP matches in the last four years, all losses.
Doubles – First Round: Brunstrom/Marx def. (3) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 6-2 6-7(1-7) 7-6(6-2)
We just knew that #3 seeding for the Poles was too high…. They lose their chances at the Top Five, although we still don’t know who will be #5.
Doubles – First Round: (7) Bhupathi/Bopanna def. Felder/Jaziri 6-0 7-6(7-1) 6-2
The fact that the apparatchiks in India’s sports ministry can’t understand that a doubles team requires chemistry doesn’t seem to be hurting their players here. Yet. Rohan Bopanna has a pretty good shot at a Top Ten spot…
Doubles – First Round: (8) Qureshi/Rojer def. Goodall/Ward 7-6(7-3) 6-2 6-4
…but his ex-partner Aisam Qureshi still has a slight lead. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) Mirnyi………….9520
1..(1) Nestor………….9520
3..(3) Bryan…………..6920
3..(3) Bryan…………..6920
5..(7) Paes……………6165
6..(5) Llodra………….6130
7..(8) Matkowski……….6085
7..(9) Fyrstenberg……..6085
9..(6) Zimonjic………..6030
10.(12) Qureshi…………4510
Doubles – First Round: Kukushkin/Rosol def. (13) Fleming/Hutchins 3-6 4-6 6-2 7-6(7-5) 6-3
Doubles – First Round: Darcis/Rochus def. Burton/Morgan 4-6 7-5 7-6(7-3) 6-4
Doubles – First Round: Erlich/A Ram def. Huey/Inglot 4-6 6-3 2-6 7-6(8-6) 9-7
Doubles – First Round: Clement/Llodra def. Ramirez Hidalgo/Ramos 6-2 6-2 6-7(4-7) 6-0
Arnaud Clement’s singles career is over; he lost in the qualifying, and that was officially that. But the farewell doubles tour is off to a nice start. This lets Michael Llodra stay ahead of Fyrstenberg and Matkowski in the rankings.
Doubles – First Round: J Delgado/Skupski def. Bachinger/Kamke 6-3 5-7 6-3 6-4
Doubles – First Round: Marrero/Seppi def. Blake/Querrey 3-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2
