Six-time former champion and third seed Roger Federer knocked out Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday for a place in the third round at The Championships, Wimbledon.aspx”>Wimbledon. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall watched the match on Centre Court.

The 30-year-old Federer is now two match wins away from 850 victories (848-192). He hit 35 winners and 13 aces past Fognini in the pair’s second meeting. The Swiss also won 21 of 23 points at the net.

“I was serving well,” said Federer. “You’re not going to get many chances throughout a set, maybe, against me, when I’m serving well. I didn’t think it was that easy of a match. [I] really tried to focus hard and made sure I played sort of a clean match, which I was able to do again today.”

Eighth seed Janko Tipsarevic is one victory away from equalling his best performance at The Championships. The 28-year-old Serbian advanced to the third round after he improved to 4-0 lifetime against American qualifier Ryan Sweeting with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 win. Tipsarevic reached the fourth round in 2007 (l. to Ferrero) and 2008 (l. to Schuettler).

Argentina’s Juan Monaco, the No. 15 seed, reached the third round for the first time after he beat Jeremy Chardy of France 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and 33 minutes. He improved to a 23-8 match record on the season, which includes two ATP World Tour titles at the VTR Open in Vina del Mar (d. Berlocq) and US Men’s Clay Court Championship (d. Isner).

Milos Raonic required just a few minutes and five points to complete his win over Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. In a first-round match, carried over from Tuesday night, Raonic started serving at 5-4 in the third set and soon wrapped up a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win.
