Wimbledon

Singles – First Round: (1) Maria Sharapova def. Anastasia Rodionova 6-2 6-3

Maria Sharapova picks up right where she left off at Roland Garros. It’s not likely that this will make any real difference in the contest for #1, but hey, it’s points….

Singles – First Round: (3) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3 6-3

Agnieszka Radwanska, who crashed and burned at Eastbourne, comes back strong. She has already defended her points, so it will be hard to take away her #3 spot.

Singles – First Round: (5) Samantha Stosur def. Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1 6-3

If someone does catch Radwanska, though, it is likely to be Samantha Stosur, who lost first round last year and is now #4 in safe points by a substantial margin. Carla Suarez Navarro will very likely lose her Top Forty spot.

Singles – First Round: (8) Angelique Kerber def. Lucie Hradecka 6-4 6-1

No signs of Eastbourne after-effects for Angelique Kerber, who is now a solid #7 in safe points.

Singles – First Round: (11) Li Na def. Ksenia Pervak 6-3 6-1

Li Na defends her points and keeps herself within reach of the Top Ten. But Ksenia Pervak, who reached the fourth round last year, may well lose her Top Fifty ranking.

Singles – First Round: (15) Sabine Lisicki def. Petra Martic 6-4 6-2

Because Sabine Lisicki was a semifinalist last year, she still needs more than this just to stay Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Carmila Giorgi def. (16) Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-3

Not the best news for Italy’s Olympic hopes…. Flavia Pennetta wasn’t defending a lot, but this means at minimum that she will not reach the Top Fifteen.

Singles – First Round: (17) Maria Kirilenko def. Alexandra Cadantu 6-3 6-1

Maria Kirilenko needs one more win to defend her points, but given the day’s other results, her Top Twenty spot now looks fairly safe.

Singles – First Round: Kim Clijsters def. (18) Jelena Jankovic 6-2 6-4

Kim Clijsters didn’t look especially great in this match, but Jelena Jankovic… well, suffice it to say that she had her head in her towel a lot on the changeovers, and with good reason. The only good news is, she lost her opener last year also, so she won’t fall any more. Clijsters has a fair shot at a return to the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: (20) Nadia Petrova def. (Q) Maria Elena Camerin 6-0 6-2

Six straight wins for Nadia Petrova, who however will almost certainly need at least one more to stay Top Twenty.

Singles – First Round: (23) Petra Cetkovska def. Vania King 6-4 6-2

Petra Cetkovska needs two more wins to defend her points, but our feeling is that this will keep her Top Thirty. Vania King will remain around #60.

Singles – First Round: Jamie Hampton def. (27) Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 7-6(7-1)

Evidently Daniela Hantuchova is still not quite back. This looks like it will cost her her Top Thirty ranking. It’s an impressive result for Jamie Hampton even so — she has a bad back and has never played on grass before.

Singles – First Round: Stephanie Foretz Gacon def. (29) Monica Niculescu 6-4 3-6 6-3

Monica Niculescu loses her Top Thirty chance.

Singles – First Round: (30) Peng Shuai def. (Q) Sandra Zaniewska 6-2 6-7(3-7) 6-3

Peng Shuai needs two more wins to defend her points, but she now seems pretty sure to stay Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: Tsvetana Pironkova def. (Q) Vesna Dolonc 5-7 6-0 7-5

Evidently the physical problem Tsvetana Pironkova suffered at Eastbourne wasn’t too bad. But she still needs at least one more win, and probably two, to stay Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. Alberta Brianti 6-2 3-6 6-3

Ekaterina Makarova says her favorite surface is hardcourt, but her results say her best surface is grass. This may well spell a Top Forty spot.

Singles – First Round: Sorana Cirstea def. Pauline Parmentier 6-4 6-1

This ought to put Sorana Cirstea in the Top Fifty, but Pauline Parmentier loses a bunch of points and will probably fall out of the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Sloane Stephens def. (Q) Karolina Pliskova 6-2 6-2

Sloane Stephens is the #2 young American (behind Christina McHale), and with this she is getting close to the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Hsieh Su-Wei def. (WC) Virginie Razzano 6-2 6-4

Hsieh Su-Wei ought to rise above #60.

Singles – First Round: Silvia Soler-Espinosa def. Edina Gallovits-Hall 4-6 6-4 10-8

These two both tend to prefer clay, but Silvia Soler-Espinosa has been making all-around progress lately; she is getting close to the Top Sixty.

Singles – First Round: Timea Babos def. (WC) Melanie Oudin 6-4 4-6 6-3

Melanie Oudin seemed to be on a hot streak, and Timea Babos seemed to be going nowhere, so naturally this happened…. Babos was defending points, so she still needs more to ensure that she stays above #70.

Singles – First Round: Lourdes Dominguez Lino def. (WC) Naomi Broady 6-4 7-6(7-4)

Lourdes Dominguez Lino still has about 50 more points to defend.

Singles – First Round: Arantxa Rus def. (LL) Misaki Doi 7-5 6-3

Arantxa Rus still has a few more points to defend, but this ought to keep her above #80.

Singles – First Round: Anna Tatishvili def. Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4 6-2

In practical terms, this probably marks the end of Tamarine Tanasugarn’s career. She came in at #115, with 160 points to defend, meaning that she will fall to around #145. And grass is her best surface, so she loses her best chance at rebuilding.

Singles – First Round: Elena Vesnina def. Venus Williams 6-1 6-3

This isn’t quite as dire for Venus Williams as some reports have made it; although Elena Vesnina struggles at Slams, she is a very good player. Still, Venus loses a lot of points; she will fall from #58 to probably just above #70. And she really didn’t look good in this match.

Singles – First Round: Ayumi Morita def. Jarmila Gajdosova 6-4 6-3

Jarmila Gajdosova just keeps sliding; she will be around #100.

Singles – First Round: Andrea Hlavackova def. Chang Kai-Chen 6-1 6-2

Chang Kai-Chen will not make the Top Hundred at this time.

Singles – First Round: Bojana Jovanovski def. Eleni Daniilidou 5-7 6-3 2-0 retired (left thigh injury)

Eleni Daniilidou is another player who really can’t afford to lose chances on grass. It appears this will cost her her Top Hundred spot.

Singles – First Round: Heather Watson def. Iveta Benesova 6-2 6-1

That should do it. Heather Watson will join Laura Robson and Anne Keothavong as British players in the Top Hundred. It remains to be seen whether Elena Baltacha will give them a fourth. Iveta Benesova will fall to around #60.

Singles – First Round: Mathilde Johansson def. Lesia Tsurenko 3-6 6-0 6-3

Lesia Tsurenko will be falling out of the Top Hundred.

Doubles – First Round: (11) Grandin/Uhlirova def. Panova/Zhang 6-2 5-7 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Jans-Ignacik/Rosolska def. (12) Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja 4-6 7-6(8-6) 6-4

Our doubles preview says that the #12 seeds were “unlikely to do damage” here. We wrote that the day before action started; honest, we did!

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
