Eastbourne

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Marion Bartoli def. (7) Lucie Safarova 6-4 6-2

Lucie Safarova loses her chance to return to the Top Twenty. Marion Bartoli is the only seed left in the top half, but she will be #9 no matter what happens here.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) Angelique Kerber def. Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-4

There was a rain delay in the middle of this, but other than that, it was quite quick — a hair less than an hour. Angelique Kerber still needs a lot more to reach #7 this week — it will require a title, in fact — but the points she is adding here make it that much easier for her to climb at Wimbledon. Based on current form, it seems not at all unlikely.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Klara Zakopalova def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3 7-5

Maybe Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won’t make it back to the Top Thirty after all. Klara Zakopalova has a shot. This win made her #31 in safe points, and a final would make her Top Thirty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Tamira Paszek def. Tsvetana Pironkova 6-0 6-4

Tamira Paszek seemed to be trying to self-destruct in the second set of this — but Tsvetana Pironkova, who of course has trouble going deep in events, was limping badly. It seemed to be more than just cramps. One game from the end, Paszek called her coach while Pironkova seemed to be looking for medical help. Obviously the delay didn’t help Pironkova, who will be around #37. Paszek has put herself back in the Top Fifty.

Doubles – Quarterfinals: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Robson/Watson 6-4 7-6(7-3)

There isn’t much to say about this match — but Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond had a lot to say about the Olympics; see today’s Feature.

Doubles – Quarterfinals: Groenefeld/Zakopalova def. Hantuchova/Zheng 6-4 7-5

‘s-Hertogenbosch

The rain that has been so problematic lately was back on Thursday. No doubles matches were finished, and the fourth singles quarterfinal, Flipkens versus Vinci, had to be halted with Flipkens up 6-4 6-5 (but on serve)

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) Nadia Petrova def. (3) Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-0

Dominika Cibulkova loses another chance to rise above #13. Nadia Petrova is just starting to add points, so she hasn’t moved yet, but if she can win the title, she would return to the Top Twenty. And there aren’t many other seeds left here.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) Urszula Radwanska def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 7-6(7-3)

The year’s biggest grass story strikes again! We show Urszula Radwanska up to about #59. She leaves Sofia Arvidsson probably #47 — down a spot from where she came in, even though she added points.

Singles – Quarterfinal: Kim Clijsters def. Francesca Schiavone 6-3 7-6(9-7)

This surely isn’t going to surprise anyone — at least Francesca Schiavone managed to win a couple of matches prior to this. She needed that. But she won’t rise above her current #26. Kim Clijsters is up to about #46.
