Wimbledon contender Jo-Wilfried Tsonga injured the little finger on his racquet hand during a mid-match tumble at Queen’s club, with the world No. 5 is now worried about his fitness for the grass-court Grand Slam which starts in 10 days.
The Frenchman hurt his right-hand finger as he lost 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) in the third-round to Croatian Ivan Dodig.
“I think it’s serious, it sounds very bad. We will see. I will have the exam,” said Tsonga, Queen’s finalist last year against Andy Murray. “I felt like I broke something or I stretched a lot of ligaments, I would say,” said Tsonga.
“I have to remain positive. I don’t know now what this means for Wimbledon. I could barely hold my racquet and for the last games of the match my mind was not in it at all. When I first fell on it, it went numb, but then when I touched it later it really hurt.”
Tsonga’s exit followed the departure a day earlier of top seed Murray, who was later forced with withdraw form doubles with his brother Jamie due to fitness issues. Four-time champions Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick also lost in opening matches at the upset-filled tournament.
