Three-time Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick has been thrown a lifeline and the chance to sharpen up his grass-court tennis in time for the Wimbledon start on June 25 after being handed a wild card entry into next week’s Eastbourne event.
Roddick, his ranking now down to 32nd and the loser of his last six matches dating to late March, will join a field headed by Frenchman Richard Gasquet at Devonshire Park on the windswept English south coast.
The 2003 US Open champion has been dealing with injury and illness for the past few seasons and most lately overcame a hamstring injury. He lost a French Open first round match was eliminated in his opening match as a four-time champion this week at Queen’s club, London.
“Players talk about the laid-back atmosphere at Eastbourne and I’m really looking forward to putting the finishing touches to my Wimbledon preparations on the grass courts down there,” Roddick said in a statement.
