Birmingham

Singles – Third Round: (4) Roberta Vinci def. Heather Watson 6-3 4-6 6-1

Out goes our last British player — with the side effect that Roberta Vinci has now clinched a Top 24 Wimbledon seed.

Singles – Third Round: (5/WC) Jelena Jankovic def. Casey Dellacqua walkover (GI illness)

The points are just barely starting to count for Jelena Jankovic, but it appears this will be enough to put her back into the Top Twenty.

Singles – Third Round: (8) Ekaterina Makarova def. (9) Marina Erakovic 2-6 6-1 6-3

Based on current rankings, this is an upset; Ekaterina Makarova was, and remains, below #50. She costs Marina Erakovic the chance to rise above #45.

Singles – Third Round: (13) Hsieh Su-Wei def. Melinda Czink 6-1 6-2

Still not much movement for Hsieh Su-Wei, but another win would certainly take her above #60.

Singles – Third Round: (Q) Melanie Oudin def. Elena Vesnina 6-0 6-2

Once again Elena Vesnina takes one step forward, one back. But Melanie Oudin is definitely taking steps forward. She should rise above #170.

Singles – Third Round: (Q) Zheng Jie def. Andrea Hlavackova 6-4 6-1

Even though she is a qualifier here, Zheng Jie is assured a Wimbledon seed — and even has a shot at the #24 seed. It looks like she wants it, too. Her odds are getting better as players withdraw and she keeps winning (see the Feature).

Singles – Third Round: Irina Falconi def. Urszula Radwanska 7-5 6-3

Urszula Radwanska’s winning streak ends at seven. Irina Falconi is up to about #80 — and with a big opportunity, since she faces Oudin next.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Brianti/Cadantu 6-1 6-2

Doubles – First Round: (4) Kops-Jones/Spears def. Hantuchova/Lisicki 6-0 6-3

More evidence of rust from Daniela Hantuchova. A good thing she has another week until Wimbledon….

Doubles – First Round: Dushevina/Tanasugarn def. Moore/South 5-7 6-1 10-1 (Match TB)

Bad Gastein

Singles – Second Round: (2/WC) Yanina Wickmayer def. Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 7-6(7-4) 6-3

We’ve already had two Wimbledon withdrawals (see the Feature), so Yanina Wickmayer finds herself with Wimbledon seeding hopes — if she does very well here.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Ksenia Pervak def. Sarah Gronert 6-2 6-3

This will put Ksenia Pervak in the Top Forty. She doesn’t have much chance for a Wimbledon seed, but if people keep withdrawing and she keeps winning, it isn’t absolutely impossible.

Singles – Second Round: Mandy Minella def. (4) Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 3-6 6-3

You’d think all these clay die-hards who came here to avoid even the thought of grass would do better on the clay…. Carla Suarez Navarro, who seemed to be one of the favorites here, loses her shot at a Wimbledon seed.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Chichi Scholl def. (6) Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3 6-4

This is turning into a pretty good start to Chichi Scholl’s WTA career. Of course, Irina-Camelia Begu’s funk probably helped.

Singles – Second Round: (7) Alize Cornet def. Sacha Jones 6-3 6-2

Alize Cornet will probably rise above #70 as a result of this.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Johanna Larsson def. Jill Craybas 6-2 6-3

This, sadly, is more typical of Jill Craybas’s recent results than was her first round win. Still, just winning her opener should gain her about five places.

Singles – Second Round: Estrella Cabeza Candela def. (Q) Richel Hogenkamp 6-4 6-3

Estrella Cabeza Candela should rise to around #140.

Singles – Second Round: Yvonne Meusburger def. (Q) Dia Evtimova 6-2 6-3

It appears Dia Evtimova will move above #150 even with the loss.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Groenefeld/Martic def. Cabeza Candela/Duque Marino 3-6 6-4 10-3 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: (4) Craybas/Goerges def. (WC) Neuwirth/Rottmann 6-2 6-2

Doubles – First Round: H Birnerova/Hogenkamp def. (WC) B Haas/Toljan 6-4 6-1

Doubles – First Round: Jugic-Salkic/Klemenschits def Abramovic/Tomljanovic 7-6(7-5) 6-1
