Serena Williams did not flee Paris after her shocking first round loss to Virginie Razzano at Roland Garros. The 13-time Grand Slam winner, who owns an apartment in Paris, decided to work out at the Paris-based Patrick Mouratoglou Academy with the notable coach.
“I’ve always had tremendous respect for her. I’ve known her for 15 years, I’ve seen 100 of her matches and finally it happened naturally,” Mouratoglou told L’Equipe.
Williams is friends with another one of Mouratoglou students, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
“She came to the academy after her defeat and has trained with me every day,” Mouratoglou added. “She is in a process of growth. She wants to become even better, on all levels. She is very hungry for victories, as if she was 18. I do not have a special knowledge. That a champion like her trusts me is rewarding.”
Serena still works with both of her parents, Richard and Oracene, and also her long time hitting partner and touring coach, Sasha Bajin. ”
It is unclear whether she will continue to work with Mouratoglou.
“I’m open to it,” he said. “As a coach, there is no more interesting person to work with than her. Anything can happen. We’ll meet again.”
