Juan Del Potro is hoping to be fit enough to make his grass-court start at Queen’s club next Monday after exiting the French Open clay to Roger Federer.
The Argentine has been troubled by a knee problem for weeks and played with a heavy strapping. But he refused to mention the problem in connection with his loss in five sets to the 2009 champion Swiss.
The No. 9 said that his first priority is to rest, but he is keen to be ready for the London start. “I would love to play Queen’s, I’m supposed to play Queen’s.”
Del Potro made a late clay start only a month ago but has played almost straight through, winning his first event at Estoril and reaching the Madrid semi-finals before exiting Rome in the third round to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. “After Estoril, I continued playing many matches. I think I’m one of the players who played the largest number of matches this year.
“I’m feeling it a bit right now, but I really want to start playing on grass. I want to raise my level on grass. Wimbledon and the Olympic Games are great motivations for me to continue to work.”
