Rafael Nadal is having some trouble concentrating on anything but the job at hand as he aims for a record seventh title at the French Open. The Spanish king of clay is so focused that he cannot even say what a possible seventh trophy might mean in light of all his other career accomplishments on the clay.
“For me, a seventh Roland Garros win is not more important than No. 2, No. 3, or No. 4,” said the Spaniard, who will work to progress as he faces a grinding quarter-final with compatriot Nicolas Almagro.
“If I win this one, and it’s the seventh one, is it more important than 2006 or 2005? I don’t know. It’s a personal feeling, a personal sensation, and records are all very important. But that’s when you’ve finished playing tennis. When you finished that, you’ll think about this.
And Nadal is not afraid to tip that rival Roger Federer might well be setting a few more records of his own, “When you are playing you think about what you have to do daily. I’ve heard a lot about records. Roger has many under his belt, he’s beaten a number of records.
“But why should we talk about them? He’s beaten so many of them. So maybe I don’t know. He’s going to be No. 1 again. This would be what I call beating a record.”
