Roland Garros

Singles – Second Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-1

This match was scheduled for Thursday, but they ran out of time. Maybe, if they had known how quick it would be, they would have gone for it….

Singles – Third Round: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4 6-4

Aleksandra Wozniak still can’t find her way back into the Top Fifty….

Singles – Third Round: (26) Svetlana Kuznetsova def. (3) Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1 6-2

It’s hard to blame Agnieszka Radwanska for this, since Svetlana Kuznetsova played very well. Still, you wonder what might have happened had Radwanska been less tired. She once again loses a chance at #2 — which almost assures that Maria Sharapova will keep the #2 spot, although Petra Kvitova still has an outside chance at it. Kuznetsova was a quarterfinalist last year, so she still needs one more win to stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: (6) Samantha Stosur def. (27) Nadia Petrova 6-3 6-3

One more win and Samantha Stosur should pass Serena Williams to return to the Top Five. Nadia Petrova will hit the Top 25 but loses her Top Twenty chance.

Singles – Third Round: (10) Angelique Kerber def. (18) Flavia Pennetta 6-4 3-6 6-?

Flavia Pennetta may make the Top Fifteen, but she loses her chance to clinch.

Singles – Third Round: (21) Sara Errani def. (13) Ana Ivanovic 1-6 7-5 6-3

Yet another breakthrough for Sara Errani. She not only guarantees herself a Top Twenty spot, she also has a shot to be the #1 Italian (although, for the moment, Flavia Pennetta still holds that spot — a correction to what we said earlier). But Errani is looking like the better player right now.

Ana Ivanovic had a shot at the Top Ten, but not now; the best she can hope for is #12. The #10 spot will probably belong to either Li Na or Vera Zvonareva.

Singles – Third Round: (15) Dominika Cibulkova def. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2 6-1

As we said above, Li and Zvonareva are the leading contenders for #10. But Dominika Cibulkova can’t be entirely counted out. She is at #13, about 200 points behind the pace.

Singles – Third Round: Petra Martic def. (29) Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 6-1

Petra Martic finds herself just below the Top Forty. She leaves Anabel Medina Garrigues at the bottom of the Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: Sloane Stephens def. Mathilde Johansson 6-3 6-2

Those who say there are no young Americans coming along aren’t quite right. Christina McHale is closing in on the Top Thirty. It’s just that there aren’t any Americans who appear likely to be #1. But this should take Sloane Stephens above #60; one more win and there will be two young Americans ranked in the Top Fifty.

Doubles – Second Round: (6) Makarova/Vesnina def. Cibulkova/S Zheng 6-4 6-2

Ekaterina Makarova is getting close to the doubles Top Fifteen. Last year’s finalist Elena Vesnina of course still has a lot to defend. We currently show the doubles Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) HUBER …………. 9590

1..(1) RAYMOND ……….. 9590

3..(3) PESCHKE ……….. 7085*

4..(4) SREBOTNIK ……… 7085*

5..(8) ERRANI ………….6220*

6..(9) VINCI …………. 6220*

7..(5) SHVEDOVA ………..5855*

8..(6) KING ……………5775*

9..(7) VESNINA ……….. 5230*

10.(12) KIRILENKO ……… 5070*

Doubles – Second Round: Chan/Chan def. (9) Grandin/Uhlirova 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (11) Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja def. Chuang/Dushevina 1-6 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Second Round: (12) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. Husarova/McHale 7-5 6-7(3-7) 7-5

We can’t speak to the personalities involved, but the results truly make it strange that Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez broke up.

Doubles – Second Round: (14) Gajdosova/Rodionova def. Dellacqua/Panova 3-6 6-4 6-1

Doubles – Second Round: Peng/Zheng def. (16) Erakovic/Niculescu 6-2 6-1

Not a big surprise; Peng/Zheng probably deserved seeding, and Erakovic and Niculescu are not fans of clay.

Doubles – Second Round: Voracova/Zakopalova def. (17) Dulko/Suarez 6-4 6-4

A few years back, Renata Voracova seemed to be turning into a very good doubles player. Then she started having nagging problems. Maybe this is a sign that she is getting over it. That could make things a bit more interesting in the doubles world.

Doubles – Second Round: Kanepi/Zhang def. Foretz Gacon/Mladenovic 6-4 6-3

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Mattek-Sands/Tecau def. Shvedova/Marrero 7-5 6-1

Not much surprise, given that Mixed rankings would have seeded Mattek-Sands/Tecau #3.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Foretz Gacon/Roger-Vasselin def. Kudrayvtseva/Polasek 6-3 6-4

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Johansson/Gicquel def. Spears/Fyrstenberg 7-5 6-3

Hard to believe even on clay. It would be unbelievable anywhere else.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Dulko/Schwank def. S Williams/B Bryan 7-5 3-6 10-6 (Match TB)

Yes, we’re surprised, too. But it has been a long time since Serena played doubles….
