Roland Garros
Singles – Second Round: (20) M Granollers def. M Jaziri 7-6(7-1) 3-6 6-1 3-6 7-5
This was of course the match that was halted yesterday. Given the crazy score, it’s hard to tell which player was helped by the delay — but the win was big for Marcel Granollers, who might well have fallen out of the Top 25 had he lost. As it is, he still has an outside shot at making the Spanish Olympic team.
Singles – Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. N Devilder 6-1 6-2 ?-?
As mentioned, we don’t have the final score on this. But it looks as if Novak Djokovic will be padding his lead on his rivals….
Singles – Second Round: (3) R Federer def. N Mahut 6-3 4-6 6-2 7-5
There isn’t much to say about the second set except, well, it was Roger Federer and a second set. Still, he slightly improves his chances of reaching #2, if not here then at Wimbledon.
Singles – Second Round: (5) J Tsonga def. F Fognini 7-5 6-4 6-4
Fabio Fognini was a quarterfinalist last year, so he will be falling far below the Top Fifty.
Singles – Third Round: (7) T Berdych def. (31) K Anderson 6-4 3-6 6-7(4-7) 6-4 6-4
Much tougher than it should have been, considering the surface. But it keeps Tomas Berdych ahead of David Ferrer — for now. Kevin Anderson will be right around #30.
Singles – Third Round: (9) J del Potro def. (21) M Cilic 6-3 7-6(9-7) 6-1
There will be no Top Twenty spot for Marin Cilic at this time. Juan Martin del Potro keeps in the hunt for #8, but he still trails Janko Tipsarevic.
Singles – Third Round: (18) S Wawrinka def. (11) G Simon 7-5 6-7(5-5) 6-7(3-5) 6-3 6-2
That’s just so Gilles Simon. There is no telling what will go wrong in the big events, but something will. He of course loses his Top Ten chance; he might lose his #12 ranking, although we won’t know that for a few more days. Stanislas Wawrinka has defended his points, which will surely keep him Top 25 at least; one more win would give him a Top Twenty shot.
Singles – Third Round: (22) A Seppi def. (14) F Verdasco 7-5 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-2
We thought Fernando Verdasco would need one more win to earn the #4 spot on the Spanish Olympic team, but it appears this may be enough — assuming no more heroics by Marcel Granollers. Andreas Seppi has now absolutely clinched his spot in the Top 25; one more win might put him in the Top Twenty.
Singles – Third Round: D Goffin def. L Kubot 7-6(7-4) 7-5 6-1
David Goffin isn’t really new, but he hasn’t made much progress until this year. Now, suddenly, he’s really taking off. The best result of his life has him close to #70. Lukasz Kubot loses a few points and will be around #50.
Doubles – First Round: (12) Butorac/Soares def. Granollers/Montanes 4-6 7-6(7-5) 6-2
Doubles – First Round: Sela/Volandri def. Fruttero/Klaasen 6-3 7-6(7-3)
Doubles – Second Round: (4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. Chela/Schwank 7-6(7-4) 6-4
If Fyrstenberg/Matkowski can keep this up, they have a genuine shot at the Top Five. It’s funny, though: Eduardo Schwank’s doubles seems to be falling off just as his singles seems to be reviving.
Doubles – Second Round: Huey/Inglot def. (5) Lindstedt/Tecau 6-3 6-4
This shocking result costs Lindstedt/Tecau their chances to move above #10; they have nowhere to go but down (although, with Bopanna/Bhupathi out, that is extremely unlikely). That means that nine of the Top Ten are now set: the Bryans, Mirnyi, Nestor, Llodra, Zimonjic, Paes, Fyrstenberg, and Matkowski. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(3) Bryan…………..7800
1..(3) Bryan…………..7800
3..(1) Mirnyi………….7540
3..(1) Nestor………….7540
5..(5) Llodra………….6490
6..(6) Zimonjic………..6470
7..(7) Paes……………6375
8..(8) Fyrstenberg……..5995
8..(8) Matkowski……….5995
10.(10) Lindstedt……….5200
10.(11) Tecau…………..5200
Doubles – Second Round: (8) Melzer/Petzschner def. Berlocq/Marrero 6-3 7-6(9-7)
Doubles – Second Round: Dodig/Melo def. (9) Cermak/Polasek 5-7 6-3 7-6(7-4)
A distinct surprise on clay — Cermak/Polasek like it a lot, and Ivan Dodig seems to dislike it.
Doubles – Second Round: (10) Qureshi/Rojer def. Phau/Shamasdin 6-3 3-6 7-6(7-4)
Doubles – Second Round: (Marach/Zeballos def. (11) S Gonzalez/Kas 6-7(4-7) 6-2 6-1
Not a good day for odd-numbered seeds, whatever that tells us.
Doubles – Second Round: Knowles/Malisse def. (13) Erlich/A Ram 7-6(7-4) 6-3
Erlich/Ram finally won their first clay title earlier this year, but it is evident that they still don’t like the surface!
Doubles – Second Round: (14) Bracciali/Starace def. Dolgopolov/Molchanov 6-1 6-7(6-8) 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: (16) Cabal/Farah def. Cerretani/Hanescu 6-4 6-3
At least one of last year’s surprise finalists is still standing….
Doubles – Second Round: Ebden/Harrison def. Gicquel/Roger-Vasselin 6-3 6-7(3-7) 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Mattek-Sands/Tecau def. Shvedova/Marrero 7-5 6-1
Not much surprise, given that Mixed rankings would have seeded Mattek-Sands/Tecau #3.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Foretz Gacon/Roger-Vasselin def. Kudrayvtseva/Polasek 6-3 6-4
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Johansson/Gicquel def. Spears/Fyrstenberg 7-5 6-3
Hard to believe even on clay. It would be unbelievable anywhere else.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Dulko/Schwank def. S Williams/B Bryan 7-5 3-6 10-6 (Match TB)
Yes, we’re surprised, too. But it has been a long time since Serena played doubles….
