Now I'm going to break down the women's draw - or at least the first round of it. I won't pretend like I'm incredibly knowledgeable about the WTA tour.
The first day of the year's second Grand Slam having come to a close, I've decided I will reflect on the happenings of today, and give my predictions for the rest of the matches that have yet to be played.
We Americans adore solid impact, the forceful propulsion of a ball leaving our racquet at Mach speeds as it heads across the net and slams into the back fence for an un-returnable winner. Our kidneys pulse out the adrenal surge and we succumb to a momentary euphoric state. The high is addictive in ways that only heroin junkies and hopeless romantics can understand.
Get well soon Mardy Fish. Sounds like Cedars was a busy place on Wednesday. Mardy was there. Elton John was there. I was there.
Looks like the new-model Maria Sharapova -- the one who loves clay -- is still here.
Even with this win, Rafael Nadal is more than 500 points behind Roger Federer in the contest for #2. But, of course, he's Rafael Nadal and this is Roland Garros. It may not matter much....
Just finishing my 3rd day of the main draw! It is still feels funny to have a sunday start but the crowds love it!
Razzano Stuns Serena In First Round
France's Virginie Razzano shocks the world by defeating Serena Williams 4-6 7-6 6-3 in a three-hour see-saw match on court Phillipe Chatrier.
Across the water there was a nation needing a win, and a win they got - Heather Watson became the lone Brit into the second round of the French Open on Tuesday, as the first round of the clay court Slam wrapped up. Playing six-time WTA finalist Elena Vesnina, Watson was more aggressive and steadier in the match too, hitting more winners (18 to 14) and far less unforced errors (11 to 23).
Venus Williams will keep her options open in doubles over the coming weeks as the American works to qualify for a place at the London Games in July. The player who turns 32 next month is living with the energy-sapping illness which she revealed in 2011 and may have to ration her time on court.
United States Davis Cup captain Jim Courier admitted he expects Andy Roddick to announce his retirement if the current slump down the ATP World Tour rankings continues for the 29 year-old former world no.1
Late-arriving champion Li Na found herself unable to train on the showcourt where she made her name in tennis a year ago by wining the French Open. China's shining star said that for her first few days at Roland Garros, there was no court time available at the main Philipe Chatrier Court as it had all been fully filled by other elite players.
Mardy Fish has finally broken his silence over the mystery illness that has kept him off the ATP World Tour for nearly two months and prevented him from contesting the current French Open. The 30 year-old American revealed he recently underwent a medical procedure to combat a heart condition doctors described as a form of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).
Second seed Rafael Nadal began his quest for a record* seventh Roland Garros title on Tuesday with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 first-round victory over Simone Bolelli of Italy. He improved to 46-1 on Parisian clay and to 150-21 lifetime at major championships.
