Roland Garros

Singles – Second Round: (4) Petra Kvitova def. Urszula Radwanska 6-1 6-3

The loss by Serena Williams did not clinch Petra Kvitova’s #4 ranking, but only Samantha Stosur and Caroline Wozniacki can pass her, and Wozniacki needs a title and she needs Kvitova to lose soon. We’d say Kvitova has clinched her Top Five spot.

Singles – Second Round: (7) Li Na def. Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-0 6-2

One more win might let Li Na stay Top Ten — if everyone else (especially Ana Ivanovic) cooperates and doesn’t add more points.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Caroline Wozniacki def. Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1 6-4

If Caroline Wozniacki had played like this earlier in the clay season, she might not have fallen all the way to #9. It looks like she will gain at least one ranking spot.

Singles – Second Round: (10) Angelique Kerber def. Olga Govortsova 6-3 6-2

This was carried over from the day before, but it didn’t take much time to catch up! Angelique Kerber moves closer to assuring herself the #9 ranking; Olga Govortsova, who was defending big points, is just barely clinging to the Top Hundred.

Singles – Second Round: (14) Francesca Schiavone def. Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6 6-3 6-1

This will keep Francesca Schiavone around #25 — but still a far cry from the #12 she came in with. Tsvetana Pironkova will probably be within one place of #40.

Singles – Second Round: Klara Zakopalova def. (16) Maria Kirilenko 6-4 3-6 6-3

This isn’t a terrible loss for Maria Kirilenko — the win guarantees that Klara Zakopalova will return to the Top Forty — but it is part of a disturbing pattern of not-so-good losses by the Russian. Kirilenko will not rise above her current #17 and may well fall.

Singles – Second Round: Varvara Lepchenko def. (19) Jelena Jankovic 7-6(7-4) 4-6 6-4

More points gone for Jelena Jankovic. She will lose one or two more ranking spots.

Singles – Second Round: (22) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. Melinda Czink 4-6 6-3 6-3

This is the best result for Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in some time, but she still has more than 300 points to defend and is still below the Top Thirty in safe points.

Singles – Second Round: (23) Kaia Kanepi def. Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4 6-1

Kaia Kanepi has defended her points — and, because of the odd schedule this week, that makes it almost certain that she will hit the Top Twenty.

Singles – Second Round: (25) Julia Goerges def. Heather Watson (Q) 6-3 6-4

Julia Goerges defends her points; one more win would clinch a Top 25 spot.

Singles – Second Round: (28) Peng Shuai def. Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4 6-3

This makes it very likely that Peng Shuai will stay Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Nina Bratchikova def. Claire Feuerstein (WC) 3-6 6-3 7-5

Nina Bratchikova has been very lucky here — she faced first Monica Niculescu, who had a terrible clay season, and then a wildcard — but the points still count, and should take her above #90.

Singles – Second Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. (LL) Sesil Karatantcheva 4-6 6-4 6-1

No doubt at all, now: Carla Suarez Navarro is Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: Christina McHale def. (Q) Lauren Davis 6-1 6-3

One more win and Christina McHale is Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: Arantxa Rus def. Virginie Razzano 6-3 7-6(7-3)

What in the world does it say that Virginie Razzano could beat Serena Williams but not Arantxa Rus? Other than that Razzano will end up around #90, anyway.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Yaroslava Shvedova def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-1 6-0

Yaroslava Shvedova should rise to around #110. Sofia Arvidsson will probably be just above #50.

Doubles – Second Round: (2) Peschke/Srebotnik def. Govortsova/Voskoboeva 7-5 6-1

We thought, given the way Peschke/Srebotnik have been struggling, that this might be the match that ended their run. Maybe this means they are finally turning the corner.

Doubles – Second Round: (4) Errani/Vinci def. Babos/Hsieh 6-4 6-2

The points are just starting to count for Errani/Vinci, but they have a pretty fair shot at the Top Five even so.

Doubles – Second Round: (5) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Groenefeld/Martic 6-4 6-3

Eight straight wins for Hlavackova/Hradecka here, but they’re still stuck around #20 in safe points.

Doubles – Second Round: (7) Kirilenko/Petrova def. Amanmuradova/Bondarenko 6-4 6-2

Odd that Kirilenko can be so strong in doubles but so weak in singles.

Doubles – Second Round: Dekmeijere/Tanasugarn def. (10) Kops-Jones/Spears 6-4 6-4

Tamarine Tanasugarn probably hates clay even more than the American pair, so this is a fair surprise.

Doubles – Second Round: Pennetta/Schiavone def. Kerber/A.Radwanska 3-6 6-4 6-2

Doubles – Second Round: Bratchikova/Gallovits-Hall def. Daniilidou/Minella 6-3 6-2

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (1) Huber/Mirnyi def. Dushevina/Cabal 6-2 7-5

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Peschke/M Bryan def. Parmentier/Paire 6-4 6-1

Mixed Doubles – First Round: (3) Srebotnik/Zimonjic def. Rodionova/Kas 6-3 6-3

A dull day for Mixed rankings. The Mixed rankings say Srebotnik/Zimonjic should be seeded higher, and the other teams in action lower, but did not predict any alternative outcomes.

Mixed Doubles – First Round: Llagostera Vives/Marach def. Hesse/Llodra 7-6(7-4) 2-6 10-3
