Thomas Johansson, the former Australian Open champion, has joined the team of Caroline Wozniacki to provide the coaching impetus to halt the former world no.1’s slide down the WTA rankings.
Johansson, who has concentrated on being Tournament Director of the If Stockholm Open for the last couple of years but like Wozniacki is a Monaco resident has worked with the 21 year old’s camp in the build up to the French Open.
He will not be at Roland Garros but it has been announced Johansson has agreed a deal to continue through Wimbledon and the Olympic Games s up to and including the U.S. Open.
Wozniacki’s father Piotr, who has always dominated his daughter’s coaching, said: “Thomas is very experienced and has played tennis at a high level. So he can see some things we others might not see.
“We have made agreements and put a plan with him, but he also has his work and child and family. It’s good, he lives in Monaco, so we can work together. He’s ready when we get back from here.”
Late last year Spaniard Ricardo Sanchez was co-opted as coach alongside Wozniacki senior but the relationship was abandoned after only a matter of weeks.
Sanchez was fired after the Australian Open and Piotr Wozniacki said: “Caroline did not feel that she was given enough new impetus out of it. At the same time seemed Ricardo also said that it was very difficult to get into our team and the co-operation that Caroline and I have had for many years. He would prefer as a coach working with things themselves.”
