Australia’s best 12-year old female tennis ace is setting her sights on Roland Garros and a potential showdown with tennis legend Steffi Graf.
Twelve year-old Destanee Aiava from Narre Warren in Victoria, has been selected by Tennis Australia to compete in the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament in June, during the French Open.
“I’ve not played outside Australia before so I’m really excited to be competing with other girls my age from around the world” Destanee said.
“The Longines tournament will be a real test for me, but I like playing on clay and think I have the determination and aggression to match any opponent.”
Now in its fourth year, the Longines Future Tennis Aces tournament continues Longines’ commitment and support of young athletes in their pursuit of sporting excellence.
Supporting the event is tennis champion and Longines ambassador, Steffi Graf. Graf, who holds 22 Grand Slams including six French Open titles, will take centre stage
alongside the finalists in an exhibition match at the conclusion of the tournament.
“This is an amazing opportunity for Destanee to compete at one of the world’s most prestigious tennis venues,” Australia’s Federation Cup coach and former French Open semi-finalist, Nicole Bradtke said.
“The international court time will be invaluable for building her tennis career and she will also experience first-hand, the buzz and excitement that surrounds the French Open.”
The elimination tournament will be played at Roland Garros from 7 to 9 June with the two finalists receiving full funding from Longines for their sporting equipment until their 16th birthday.
