Roger Federer can’t be worried about counting ranking points after overhauling Rafael Nadal for second on the ATP list and working to make a move on Novak Djokovic over a frantic few upcoming months in the game.
After winning the Madrid title, the No.2 made a last-minute decision to start in Rome as the build-up for Roland Garros reaches its peak.
But as worrying about his ranking points, that’s wasted time for the Swiss. “We’ll see how things go, now we have grand slams. I have some good wins under my belt. I might be No. 3 but that doesn’t matter for me or for Rafa.
“It’s an interesting time right now and there’s a lot to talk about rankings. I know that I have a shot (at No. 1) until the US Open, so we will see.”
Unlike Nadal, who apparently makes it his daily business to know his place in minute, mathematical detail, Federer takes a casual, big-picture approach. “I wouldn’t even know how many points I am right now. Just occasionally I’ll check other rankings like my friend Stan. I like to know what the other guys have to defend and what I have to defend.
“I stopped counting points a long time ago. It just consumes more energy.”
