Rome

Singles – First Round: (9) J Isner def. P Kohlschreiber 2-6 7-6(7-3) 6-2

By the looks of things, John Isner spent this match learning how to play clay. He seemed doomed in the second set, but he managed to fight back. That keeps alive his hopes of staying Top Ten. Philipp Kohlschreiber is still #24 in safe points, but we’d guess that this will cost him his Top 24 Roland Garros seed.

Singles – First Round: (12) N Almagro def. M Cilic 6-2 3-6 6-0

There will be no return to the Top Twenty for Marin Cilic. He is likely to be one of the Top 24 Roland Garros seeds, but this loss means that he probably won’t clinch for several more days.

Singles – First Round: (13) G Monfils def. A Bogomolov Jr. 6-4 6-1

Alex Bogomolov’s slump continues. It looks as if he’ll be a slot or two below #45; certainly he won’t be seeded in Paris.

Singles – First Round: R Stepanek def. J Chela 2-6 6-0 6-3

No Roland Garros seed for Juan Ignacio Chela; he will be lucky if he manages to stay Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: B Tomic def. (Q) S Giraldo 4-6 6-2 6-4

This just about clinches Bernard Tomic’s Top Thirty spot. We’d say it does clinch his Roland Garros seed.

Singles – First Round: C Berlocq def. (Q) B Kavcic 6-1 6-3

Carlos Berlocq keeps his Roland Garros seeding hopes alive, but he needs about 150 more points….

Singles – First Round: S Wawrinka def. (Q) R Haase 6-1 4-6 7-5

No Roland Garros seed for Robin Haase. Stanislas Wawrinka is likely, but not quite certain, to be Top Twenty when this is over.

Singles – First Round: F Verdasco def. A Dolgopolov 6-0, retired .(intestinal pain)

There goes Alexander Dolgopolov’s hope for a Top Sixteen seed in Paris. Which is a boost to Fernando Verdasco’s hopes; the only other real contender left is Feliciano Lopez.

Singles – First Round: D Nalbandian def. (Q) A Ramos 6-3 6-4

Mark down Albert Ramos as another who won’t be seeded in Paris. Rather unfortunate, in his case, given his clay results this year. If they truly seeded by surface, he probably deserves a seed in Roland Garros.

Singles – First Round: (WC) F Fognini def. M Baghdatis 6-2 6-2

There will be no Top Forty spot, and no Paris seed, for Marcos Baghdatis.

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Naso/Volandri def. Ferrer/F Lopez 7-5 6-4

Doubles – First Round: Bracciali/Seppi def. Nieminen/Troicki 6-3 4-6 10-3 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Kubot/Tipsarevic def. Anderson/Tomic 6-4 4-6 11-9 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: S Gonzalez/Kas def. (WC) Cipolla/Lorenzi 1-6 6-3 10-8 (Match TB)
