Is anyone else besides us here at 10sballs.com upset and confused about the fact that there is no television coverage of the woman in Madrid? Like Indian Wells and Miami, the Mutua Madrid Open is a combined ATP/WTA event, but you’d never know it. Fans of the WTA have been forced to follow live scoring online via Twitter, Facebook, or the official tournament website in order to find out how their favorite players are doing. Sure the men are often more exciting to watch, and the loud and persistent grunting from some of the women is enough to turn even the biggest fan away, but that doesn’t mean coverage should be eliminated all together.

The Mutua Madrid Open is a mandatory event on both the men and women’s side, meaning the tournament is guaranteed the appearance of top players. Such a high caliber event should not be ignored. That would be like saying that Wimbledon has decided to only show the ATP matches this year, and that fans would have to find some other way of following their favorite WTA players’ progress. It’s a bit ridiculous sounding, don’t you think? It’s just as ridiculous that a Premiere Mandatory event for the WTA be practically ignored. Between the controversy surrounding Nadal and Djokovic and the blue clay, and the possibility of Roger Federer regaining the no.2 ranking should he win the tournament, it seems as though the women have been brushed under a rug. They are there – the order of play and press conferences will tell you that. But it isn’t until you lift up the rug that their presence is actually acknowledged.

I won’t lie and pretend like I find the women’s tour fascinating. To be honest, I prefer to watch the men. To me it’s more exciting, more dramatic, and more importantly…more quiet. While that may be my opinion, I still think that the WTA should be given the same amount of attention that the ATP is – especially during mandatory tournaments like the ones in Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid.

What do you guys think? Do you feel like you’re being jipped by not being able to watch the women’s matches in Madrid? We at 10sballs.com want to know what you think. Leave your comments below and speak your mind!

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
