Roger Federer will make a late call on his participation in next week’s Rome Masters as the Swiss makes a run at a return to the ATP No. 2 ranking. If he wins the Madrid Masters on Sunday, Federer will take over behind Novak Djokovic, sending Rafael Nadal back to third.
Federer is making no promises, letting his instincts on the day – and those of his coaches – rule. With his solid run at Madrid, his only focus is his next match in the Spanish capital.
“There is a good chance I will play,” he said after reaching the quarter-finals. “But I have all my options available. For the lat couple of months I’ve taken it week by week.
“After Davis Cup (February loss to the US) I then decided if I was going to play Miami or even Indian Wells and Miami. It’s the same situation here, we’ll see how it goes.”
