After his battle to beat Milos Raonic in a Madrid opening match, Roger Federer is focusing strictly on survival in Spain, with four matches to play in four days for anyone hoping to become Sunday’s champion at the Masters 1000 played on blue clay.
After squeezing through with a winning third-set tiebreaker against the huge-serving Canadian, the 30-year-old Swiss was coming back for more against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. “I was just trying to weather the storm,” said the Swiss. “I don’t know where my game is at now and I don’t care. I’m happy to train well and be playing some matches.
“I’m happy to be playing good tennis. it’s a big win, this could create good things. It was a struggle for me tonight. but my level was good. I’m happy where I am this season.”
But he warned that his program prior to the French Open is not yet firmly fixed, with next week’s Masters 1000 in Rome sounding like a last-minute decision. “It cold be a tough week and even tougher if I play Rome.”
