United States Tennis Association National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships Set to Begin on Monday, May 14, at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

Top Senior Women Tennis Players to Compete for Prestigious National Titles

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, one of California’s most treasured beachfront resorts for more than 75 years, will host the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships on Monday, May 14, through Sunday, May 20. Events will include both singles and doubles in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age groups. The women’s events are national championships and attract the best players from all over the country in each age group, making this field of competitors the strongest in the country in each age division.

Among the entries in the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships are local players Rosalyn Nideffer of Rancho Bernardo and Escondido’s Dorothy “Dodo” Cheney.

Nideffer, a veteran tennis professional, played on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour from the late 1970s through late 1990s. A two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist and a two-time French Open doubles champion, Nideffer achieved a career-high singles ranking of 15 in the world in 1990. Earlier this year, the Rancho Bernardo resident captured the Women’s 50 singles title at the International Tennis Federation World Individual Championships in San Diego. In next week’s tournament at the Club, Nideffer will be playing singles and doubles in the 50 and over division.

Cheney, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has captured an amazing 390 national titles during her lifetime and has been awarded a USTA gold ball for each of her championships. In 1938, she became the first American woman to win the Australian Championships. Cheney will be playing doubles in the women’s 90 and over division.

“It is going to be an incredible week of tennis,” said Bill Kellogg, tournament director and President of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. “We have the best senior players coming from all across the United States. Fans will be able to see a wide range of playing styles which makes for a very entertaining viewing experience.”

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 40th Annual Spring Senior Championships for men will also take place the same week in conjunction with the women’s events. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they will feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments. The men’s events will include singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over and 80 and over age groups. A combined total of over 300 players are expected to participate in the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. from Monday, May 14 through Friday, May 18 and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. Championship finals will take place on Friday and Saturday. Consolation finals will be played on Sunday.

Mon.: 50, 60 Singles / Doubles and 70 Singles Mon.: 70 Singles

Tues.: 80, 90 Singles and 70 Doubles Tues.: 65 Singles / 70 Doubles

Wed.: 80, 90 Doubles Wed.: 60 Singles

Thurs.: 75, 80, 85 Singles / 75 Doubles

Admission to the week-long tournament is free and open to the public. A snack bar and dining facility will be available to spectators. On-site parking will also be available for a nominal fee. The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club started each of these events and has hosted them since inception. Designated one of the Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the world by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started in 1942 when it attracted its first major tournament, the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship. In addition to hosting the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Tennis Championships, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club also hosts the USTA National Men’s & Women’s 40 & Over Hard Courts, and the USTA National Father & Son Hard Court Championships, scheduled for November 26 – December 2, 2012.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club has also been home to the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships since 1942. The Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and has a rich tournament history. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast to coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, John McEnroe, and many other world-class champions. This last March, Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher of Stanford teamed to capture the 2012 Championship.

The Club also hosted the 2008 Fed Cup, and was also the proud host of the 2006 Davis Cup First Round Tie between the United States and Romania.
