Fifth seed Bernard Tomic reached his first ATP World Tour clay-court quarter-final on Thursday as he edged Italian Potito Starace 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3 in the second round of the BMW Open in Munich. The Australian trailed by a break of serve in the final set, but reeled off six of the last seven games to prevail in just over two hours.
The 19-year-old Tomic was a semi-finalist at the Brisbane International at the start of the season and improved to a 16-8 match record. He goes onto face either Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky or Spanish second seed Feliciano Lopez.
Tomic was joined in the last eight by fellow Australian Marinko Matosevic, who won a second-round duel between two qualifiers, 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-2, against Colombia’s Robert Farah. The 26-year-old Matosevic is contesting his first ATP World Tour clay-court tournament and broke serve five times from 14 opportunities to reach his second quarter-final of the season.
