Top seed Pablo Andujar was tested in his opening match at the Serbia Open 2012 on Wednesday, rallying from a set down to defeat Filippo Volandri 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals in Belgrade.
The Spaniard, who is making his debut at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament, broke serve six times and saved 10 of the 14 break points he faced to prevail in two hours and 20 minutes.
“It was a difficult match for me,” admitted Andujar. “The conditions weren’t easy; the court was very fast and it was hot, which made it a little bit more difficult. Always in your first match you have to try and stay as focussed as you can; it’s never going to be easy. I was down 6-4, 5-4 and I tried to continue playing my game and finally I made it and I’m really happy for that.”
The No. 38-ranked Andujar is chasing his second ATP World Tour title of the season after recently triumphing on clay at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca (d. Ramos). He improved to a 13-10 match record this year.
