As if three and a half months out due to a back injury weren’t enough of a lay-off, German Andrea Petkovic is now potentially facing another three months out after suffering a right ankle injury in Stuttgart.

After losing the first set, Petkovic was locked at 4-all in the second set of her second round match against World No.1 Victoria Azarenka when she ruptured two ligaments in her right ankle and overstretched two others – though she did not damage the bone or cartilage. The next steps are as of yet undecided but the 24-year-old German could potentially be out another three months.

“I have to digest it first,” Petkovic said from Stuttgart the day after. “As a professional athlete there’s always setbacks, but such an injury jinx is bitter. I’ve returned twice now after serious injuries and I’ll do the same a third time.

“But I hope then I don’t have to test my fighting spirit anymore.”

Petkovic had a breakthrough season in 2011, reaching her first three Grand Slam quarterfinals at the Australian, French and US Opens (the only player all year to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals) and making it as high as No.9 in the fall, eventually settling for No.10 on the year-end rankings in November.
