Barcelona
Singles – Semifinal: (1) R Nadal def. (9) F Verdasco 6-0 6-4
It looks as if we’re back to the Great Rafael Nadal Clay Circuit. He hasn’t won Barcelona quite as many times as Monte Carlo, but that’s mostly because he skips it some years. He leaves Fernando Verdasco at about #18.
Singles – Semifinal: (3) D Ferrer def. (11) M Raonic 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-5)
Talk about a tall order for David Ferrer: He has to face Rafael Nadal in a final, on clay, when he is much more tired than Nadal. Still, he has added enough points to gain some breathing room in his contest with Tomas Berdych for #6. He leaves Milos Raonic still just below the Top Twenty.
Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. (2) Mirnyi/Nestor 6-3 0-6 10-6 (Match TB)
Good news for the Bryans, who won’t lose much ground relative to Mirnyi/Nestor.
Doubles – Semifinal: Granollers/M Lopez def. (8) Marach/Peya 7-6(7-4) 6-1 .
Bucharest
Singles – Semifinal: (1) G Simon def. M Bachinger 7-5 6-2
Still no movement for Gilles Simon; he remains #12. But a title would make him #11.
Singles – Semifinal: F Fognini def. (Q) A Balazs 6-3 6-1
We have a funny feeling that the biggest long-term significance of this event may be the emergence of Attila Balazs. That’s not based on any data — just a feeling. His result here has already earned him a spot in his second main draw. And, even with the loss, he improves his ranking by almost 200 places.
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Lindstedt/Tecau def. Chardy/Kubot 7-6(7-2) 6-4
We can almost hear the participants here saying, “About time.” This is the first title for Lindstedt/Tecau since Bastad 2011. The bad news is, it’s another 250; they can’t seem to rise above that level. And they seem to be specializing in clay; their last non-clay title was New Haven 2010. Still, it’s a title.
Lukasz Kubot had to be wondering about his future, too — he hadn’t made a final since Santiago 2011. This won’t help his ranking much, but his singles is going fairly well. Maybe this means he’ll finally get both working at once.
