21-year-old Canadian posts his best career win to reach the semifinals

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) caused a major upset in his quarter-final match on

Friday, knocking out world no. 4 Andy Murray of Great Britain to reach the semifinals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, an ATP World Tour 500 event.

Raonic, who missed his last match up with Murray in Miami because of an ankle injury, didn’t waste his opportunity this time as he notched his best career win with a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory after one hour, 45 minutes of play. Raonic was once again dominant on serve, hitting 14 aces compared to three for Murray. He led the entire way until he was broken for the first time while serving for the match at 6-4, 5-4. The Canadian regrouped from that disappointment to dominate the second set tiebreak and come away with a straight sets triumph. The win is the best of Raonic’s career and his first over a Top 4 player. It is also his sixth win over a Top 10 player. The 21-year-old finds himself in the semifinals of an ATP event for the fourth time this year and the second time on clay in his career after reaching the final four in Estoril last season. With his win over Murray, Raonic also becomes the first Canadian to beat a Top 10 player at an ATP clay court event since 1989 when Martin

Wostenholme defeated world no. 10 Alberto Mancini in Stuttgart.

Raonic, who lost in the Round of 16 in Barcelona last year, will meet Spaniard David Ferrer no. 6 in the world, in Saturday’s semifinals. They have played three times before with all of their meetings coming in 2011. Ferrer has won all three matches.
